Modern Simplicity reflects Kathleen Probst's path toward minimalism. Her work is influenced by mid-century modern furniture, and the art and architecture of the Bauhaus era. Riot of Color: Divining Treasure introduces Darcy Falk's Schematics series of vibrant collages reflecting her childhood fascination with machines beginning with old cars at her grandfather's auto repair shop. More recently, she began to collect mechanical drawings starting with an original patent drawing for an antique American Beauty iron purchased at a thrift store. That was followed by schematics for toasters and other household appliances, along with instruction manuals for vintage cars and farm equipment. [more]

I'm not only referring to equality of humans based on their skin color, but the broad differences amongst us that people find challenging to accept and embrace," states Sheila Frampton-Cooper, curator for the exhibition, Expressions in Equality at Visions Art Museum: Contemporary Quilts + Textiles. The exhibition opens with a reception for the 25 artists on January 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Frampton-Cooper wants to bring attention to discrimination and the way society treats issues such as gender, age, sexual orientation, and economic inequality. January 17—April 4, 2015Inspired by the Siddis: Quilts by Margaret Fabrizio

After a career as a concert harpsichordist on the international stage and as music faculty at Stanford University for 25 years, artist Margaret Fabrizio discovered the kawandi (quilts) made by the Siddi women of Karnataka on a visit to India. After spending two weeks with the Siddi women in their settlement she became fascinated with their style of hand sewing quilts using scraps and recycled clothing. Fabrizio returned to her home in San Francisco and created 20 such quilts the following year using primarily fabrics from India. The Siddi women were astonished when she returned last year with fabric. Fabrizio continues to create quilts in the style of the Siddis.

What would happen if two artists whose names begin with the letter C, opened the dictionary to words that begin with C, closed their eyes and pointed to a word on the page and created a work of art from the definition? This is the project that multi-media artists Charlotte Bird of San Diego, California, and Cathy Denton of North Bend, Oregon created for themselves as a long-distance collaboration. C is for… combines the talents of these two multi-media artists who have chosen to interpret their "C" word definitions in cloth. Artists from around the globe will be at Visions Art Museum on October 20th for the premier of Quilt Visions 2012: Brainstorms the latest edition of he international biennial competition that has drawn crowds since 1987.

Three esteemed jurors were challenged to select an exhibition that represents outstanding design and technique from 394 entries. They have selected 40 outstanding works of art from 17 states and five foreign countries created in the last two years. The knowledgeable jurors were Kate Lenkowsky, author of the award-winning book, Contemporary Quilt Art: An Introduction and Guide; Jane Przybysz, former executive director of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, currently executive director of the McKissick Museum of the University of South Carolina, Columbia; and Kent Williams an award winning contemporary quilter whose work has appeared in numerous juried exhibitions including previous Quilt Visions biennials. Crazy Quilts were a new form of needlework when they first began appearing in the 1880s. Pieced, embroidered and embellished, these "crazies" were often made of silk and velvet scraps but today can be hand or machine stitched from almost anything.

The Visions Quilt Challenges have proven to be popular additions to the exhibitions. Visions members may submit one 12" square Crazy Quilt Challenges due October 25th quilt that must be for sale priced at $150, $200 or $250. Proceeds from sales benefit the artists and Visions Art Museum. Please include the title of the quilt, price, your name, address, phone, email, and note if you would like to donate the quilt to the Visions live auction if it does not sell while on exhibit.

Congratulations to Visions members whose work was juried into Interpretations 2011. A huge thank you goes to our three esteemed jurors who spent a day together at Visions Art Museum making their final selections for the exhibition.

Jurors Jamie Fingal, Catherine Gleason and Rob Sidner reviewed 230 entries from 135 artists and selected 38 quilts for the exhibition. Fingal is known world-wide as a master quilt artist, author and teacher; Gleason is associate director of San Diego State University's downtown gallery, and Sidner is director of the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego. Soft City is artist Marilyn Henrion's latest series inspired by her native New York and its vast architectural details. Walking with her camera through the streets of Manhattan, Henrion has used her own digitally manipulated photographs as subjects for her hand-stitched quilts.

May 6—July 24, 2011Evolution Transformed with Art Meets Fashion

Evolution Transformed is a fashion inspired installation created by Alexandra Hart, Elina Sheripova, Kathy Taylor and Henry Young. This exhibit is part of Art Meets Fashion, a countywide project organized by the San Diego Visual Arts Network (SDVAN) and FOCUS (Fashion Opportunities Connect Us). The project's goal is to initiate collaborations between fashion designers and visual artists.

In keeping with our fashion themed exhibitions opening May 6th, Visions Art Museum is inviting Visions members to contribute one 12" square quilt with the theme Fashion Accessories.

The Fashion Accessories challenge quilts will be on display in the Members' Foyer of the museum and for sale as a fundraiser for the artists and the museum. Visions Art Museum presents Fabric-Free Fashion featuring 22 fashion designers who have stretched the concept of fashion to include any material except fabric. The designers are crafting their fashions out of window screen, gum wrappers, tree bark, bottle caps, plant life, maps, and other non-traditional materials.

The exhibition opens with a reception for the designers on May 6th during Friday Night Liberty, a monthly open house of visual and performing art venues and galleries at the NTC Promenade at Liberty Station. Friday Night Liberty is a free, all ages event from 5 to 8 p.m. in Point Loma. [more]

The Quilt Visions museum exhibition features the best of contemporary quilting every two years and broke all attendance records during the last exhibition. Over 11,000 visitors viewed the 2008 exhibition. This year we were fortunate to again have three jurors who are at the top of their fields: Jason Busch, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh; Linda Colsh, award-winning professional quilt artist and Studio Art Quilt Associates board member; and Penny McMorris, art curator and co-author of The Art Quilt, the first book on quilt design development. She has also curated quilts for John Walsh III, and for the Ardis and Robert James collection now part of the International Quilt Study Group. Men and women all over the United States are turning to thread to tell a story. Although embroidery has been around since people began wearing clothes, the 14 artists in "The Art of the Stitch" have put a contemporary twist on this method of decorating and embellishing.

The exhibition goes on view October 15th and runs through January 23rd. The opening reception is November 5th from 5-8 pm. [more]

California Fibers: Liminal Spaces opened on February 5 at the Visions Art Quilt Gallery with a champagne reception for the artists.

Friends and supporters came from all over southern California for the celebration. It was also Friday Night Liberty at the NTC Promenade, a lively arts and culture open house that occurs on the first Friday of every month. Galleries and artist studios were open free from 5-8 p.m. and many restaurants in Liberty Station were over flowing with happy revelers. [more]

February 5—April 25, 2010Joan Hamilton - Memorial Exhibit

Over the years Quilt Visions has been fortunate to have the friendship and support of member Joan Hamilton of San Diego. We were saddened to lose Joan this fall and although she will be greatly missed, her legacy continues with quilts she bestowed to Quilt Visions.

Joan's quilts will be on exhibit in the gallery annex beginning February 5, 2010. The quilts will be for sale with proceeds donated to Quilt Visions as was Joan's wish. In addition, as a member of Canyon Quilters guild, she left her fabric stash to the guild to use for fundraising. Joan's quilts will be in the gallery through April 25, 2010.

Interpretations 2009 is this year's juried members' exhibition and will run November 14, 2009 through January 17, 2010.

After a long but interesting day of jurying, 37 quilts were selected from 217 entries from all over the world. Our thanks to the jurors, Karen McGuire, Curator of Exhibitions at William D. Cannon Art Gallery, Kristin Lewis, artist and owner of YOFI Limited Edition Textiles, and Angela Moll, fulltime studio fiber artist. Elizabeth Busch received her B.F.A from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1964. Since 1987 she has been a self-employed studio artist and teacher. Before that she made a living as an instructor of interior design, graphic designer, architectural renderer and designer, painting and drawing instructor and the Assistant Director at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. Visions Art Quilt Gallery is happy to announce the arrival of "Playing With A Full Deck: Art Quilts from the Warren and Nancy Brakensiek Contemporary Quilt Collection."

These quilts were originally organized by Sue Pierce and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). This show is a fabulous collection of works by 56 artists (two pieces are collaborations) who have each interpreted one card of an entire deck of playing cards including two jokers. Many of the artists you'll recognize from the art quilt elite as well as other Quilt Visions exhibitions. [more]
