Yvonne Porcella: Fifty Years an Artist is a retrospective marking over five decades of Porcella’s career since 1962 creating and designing unique garments, wall hangings and art quilts. Porcella is the founder of Studio Art Quilt Associates and served as its first president for 11 years. Her work is featured in museums and galleries throughout the world and she has taught and lectured in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Japan. The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution acquired her quilt, Takoage, in 1994 and included it along with 300 objects from the 15 additional Smithsonian museums in a national touring exhibition honoring the 150th anniversary of the Smithsonian.
Porcella’s work is a vibrant expression of an artist who knows how to handle color and humor with an endless palette. Her work has toured in major national and international exhibitions of contemporary American quilt makers and is in private and corporate collections. Her quilt, Answering the Riddle, was included in the 9th Invitational Triennial of Tapestry in Lodz, Poland in 1998, the same year she was inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana. Also in 1998, she received the Silver Star Award at Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas.
Porcella is author of several books that reflect the development of her artistic interests ranging from ethnic patterns to books on fabric painting, design and color. Meet Porcella, Kathleen Probst, Darcy Falk and members of San Diego’s Canyon Quilters Guild at a reception for their work on January 16, 2016, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
