Elizabeth Busch - Retrospective

April 2—June 7, 2009

Opening Reception: April 2, 5-7pm.

Elizabeth Busch received her B.F.A from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1964. Since 1987 she has been a self-employed studio artist and teacher. Before that she made a living as an instructor of interior design, graphic designer, architectural renderer and designer, painting and drawing instructor and the Assistant Director at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. Born in Yonkers, New York, Busch currently resides in Glenburn, Maine.

"Having been an artist all my life and an art quilter since 1983, I've come to realize that my art is all about process. Whether I am airbrushing, spreading textile paint on fabric, hand quilting, or weaving, I am responding to that voice within that tells me today it's time to create," states Busch.

Busch's work can be found in public, corporate and museum collections in Maine, New York, Florida, Tennessee, Canada, Japan, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas and Connecticut and has been exhibited internationally. She's published in books, magazines and journals including The Art Quilt by Robert Shaw, The Quilter's Handbook by Rosemary Wilkinson, Downeast Magazine, American Quilter, Fiberarts, Martha Stewart Living, and Contemporary Quilt Art: An Introduction and Guide by Kate Lenkowsky.

Busch has jurored many shows since 1988, including The Art Quilt: Celebrating Women's Visions and Energies, in Rochester, New York, and Quilt National in Athens, Ohio. She is also the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the President's Choice Award at Quilt Visions 2006.

The Elizabeth Busch Retrospective is a solo exhibition opening at Visions Art Quilt Gallery on April 7, 2009. Here you can witness first-hand the thought-provoking piece entitled "Knowledge" depicting planetary solitude in a dark universe, or the circular patterning in "Transition." You will see the rolling movement of color behind an army of sharp triangles in "Requiem," (pictured left). "Fall Study" is an intricate piece illustrating how color gradations can create the illusion of dimension.

Elizabeth Busch will be teaching a 2-day class, April 1 and 2, from 9am to 3:30 at the Gallery that will include painting on fabric and creating a composition using that painted fabric. Details and supply list are on the Visions website. The opening reception is Friday, April 3, from 5 to 7pm. She will also conduct a lecture and tour of her exhibition on Saturday, April 4, from 1:00 to 2:30 at the Gallery for $10 per person. Don't miss this opportunity to hear one of art quilting's luminaries talk about her work and share her techniques. A catalog of the exhibition will be for sale in the Gallery.
