Five artists from across the United States are dyeing. Their own fabric. To Dye For opens at Visions Art Museum: Contemporary Quilts + Textiles on July 16th with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Admission is $7 or complimentary for Visions members.

Things have changed since the tie-dyed tee-shirts of the 1960s and now artists are discovering new methods of hand dyed fabric. Ohio artist Sue Cavanaugh paints dye onto fabric for her stitched, gathered and dyed dress forms for A Glimpse in Alice's Closet. Cavanaugh's work is in public and private collections in the US and Europe and has been juried into several prestigious exhibitions. Cavanaugh will present a program about her work on July 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Visions Art Museum. Admission for the program is $10 or $7 for Visions Art Museum members.

Kansas artist Kim Eichler-Messmer's abstract work is influenced by the Midwest landscape. Eichler-Messmer is assistant professor of fiber at Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri and the author of Modern Color: An Illustrated Guide to Dyeing Fabric for Modern Quilts. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Ann Johnston paints dye on silk for her geographically, Oregon inspired whole cloth quilts. She developed dyeing and construction techniques that led to her colorful book, The Quilter's Book of Design, and her recent DVD, Color by Accident: Exploring Low-Water Immersion Dyeing. She has been teaching and exhibiting around the world for 30 years.

Old and new materials inspired Lyric Montgomery Kinard's Mill Wheels series. Her dyed and painted cloth is layered and stitched. A resident of North Carolina, Kinard was honored by the International Association of Professional Quilters in 2011 as teacher of the year. She is the author of Art + Quilt: Design Principles and Creativity Exercises, and two DVD workshops: Surface Design Sampler Platter, and Bead It Like You Mean It.

California artist Jeannie Palmer Moore is a mixed media fiber artist who reproduces representational and interpretative images from her own photographs and drawings. She creates a painterly style using fabric, paint, dye, screen prints and stitch. Several of her quilts are currently traveling in exhibitions with Studio Art Quilt Associates.
