CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The vision of Quilt Visions 2008: Contemporary Expressions is that art quilting is and should be treated as a fine art, like painting or sculpture.

Artistic expression is universal, and the criteria for judging it should vary only as techniques of execution and inherent aesthetics of media necessarily vary with the materials of the art.

Specific goals for our jurors, as scholarly art critics, were to select works for this show that reflect the universality of artistic expression and to report in their comments on how this show displays art quilts in the broader contemporary art context.

JURORS

Don Bacigalupi
Don Bacigalupi is director of the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, a position he has held since 2003. Before going to Toledo he was the executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art. He served as director and chief curator at Blaffer Gallery, the art museum of the University of Houston . He also served as Brown Curator of Contemporary Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art, and taught art history at the University of Texas and the University of Houston.

Dr. Bacigalupi received his Ph.D in art history from the University of Texas at Austin, with concentrations in postwar American art, popular culture and critical theory. Don considers himself foremost an educator and places high value on the opportunity that museums have to provide meaningful and inspirational interactions between artworks and individuals. He is a firm believer in the life-changing powers of art.

Judith Content
A full time studio artist for more than 25 years, Judith Content has shown nationally in exhibitions such as Quilt Visions and Quilt National as well as internationally in Japan, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Belgium and France. Her work is represented by several galleries nationally. She has work in the permanent collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and The Museum of Contemporary Arts and Design, New York, among others. Publications include The Art Quilt by Robert Shaw, and The Kimono Inspiration: Art and Art to Wear in America by Rebecca A. T. Stevens. Judith currently serves as the president of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA).

Mary Anne Jordan
Mary Anne Jordan is professor of textiles and design in the School of Fine Art at the University of Kansas at Lawrence. Professor Jordan received her M.F.A.at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1985, and her B.F.A. at the University of Michigan in 1981. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally in Japan, Poland, South America and Canada.

She has taught workshops at Arrowmont, Haystack, Split Rock, University of Iowa, and the Quilt Surface Design Symposium. Mary Anne's work has been published in magazines and journals such as Fiberarts and the Surface Design Journal. Her work is also included in The Surface Designer's Art, a book published by Lark Books. Mary Anne was chair of the 1997 Surface Design conference, "Material Culture," held at the University of Kansas.
